VANCOUVER PARK BOARD COMMISSIONER ERIN SHUM DECLARES INDEPENDENT CANDIDACY FOR CITY COUNCIL

Vancouver, BC – Vancouver Park Board Commissioner Erin Shum today announced her candidacy for City Council, emphasizing the need to move away from partisan disputes and focus on delivering results for Vancouverites.

Shum’s independent campaign will be centered on the importance of communities and themed around Building a Vancouver for Families. Her plan for complete communities includes a focus on child care, ensuring renewed attention to the needs of seniors, and the importance of safe streets.

“Now more than ever, families need a voice at the Council table,” said Shum, whose three-month-old daughter Abigail is the fourth generation of her family living in Vancouver. “Every generation needs complete communities that have something for everybody. That means child care, seniors care, safe streets, and fostering an environment where local small businesses can thrive and bring vibrancy to our neighbourhoods.”

Having served as Vancouver’s only independent elected official since December 2016, Shum has demonstrated an ability to engage the community and to work across party lines and levels of government to deliver meaningful results. Her successes include working with community leaders to move forward much needed Seniors Centres in Killarney and Sunset, spearheading a ground-breaking unanimous vote to train all Park Board employees about Autism Spectrum Disorder, and successfully opposing the imposition of pay parking at Spanish Banks.

Shum has also proudly stood up for young families and seniors on fixed incomes as the only Park Board Commissioner to consistently oppose raising user fees in the midst of Vancouver’s affordability crisis.

“It’s time to change the way we do politics in Vancouver,” said Shum. “We need team players on Council who can set aside partisanship, debate issues respectfully, and focus on delivering meaningful results for the people of Vancouver. I’m reaching out to Vancouverites from all communities and political persuasions to earn their support and trust, one vote at a time.”
